For the purposes of this article, I am not referring to actual add-on services like
• Elaborate DJ booth
• Additional sound systems
• Dance floor lighting
• Up lighting
• Monogram / name in lights (aka gobo)
• Video monitors / projector
• Dancing on a cloud
• Party props
These items require more work above and beyond any DJ's generally-expected duties, and they definitely warrant additional charges, for any event..
I am referring to specific items that most DJs list as inclusions in their wedding packages, but not in their general event packages. And those items are
Previewing the venue in person is the only way to get an accurate idea of acoustics and equipment placement, to provide the most comfortable listening experience for you and your guests. So, as long there is enough time for your sound technician to conduct a pre-event site visit, they definitely should, regardless of what kind of event you're having.
Weddings usually include items that people expect to require itinerary planning (Grand Entrance; First Dance; Parent Dances; Cake Cutting; etc). And those aforementioned items also require specific songs to accompany the moments. Hence, music programming.
But even birthdays; corporate events; etc, have a list of highlighted moments like making a spectacle of the guest of honor; award presentations; speeches; etc. And all of those items constitute itinerary planning.
Most non-wedding clients will ask their DJ to just show up and play a certain type of music, and/or to just use their best judgement.
Then, in the time leading up to the event, clients come up with certain songs that would be so perfect for such and such a moment, and ask their DJ to please make sure these songs are available.
Not only does making sure this music is available equate music programming, but those moments themselves now also count as itinerary planning.
Additionally, each communication regarding the client's sudden desires, is a consultation.
This is why, when you book me as your entertainer, I charge the same fair amount for the actual work to be performed, and I do not base my pricing on whether or not your event is a wedding.
I put my best effort into every job that I am booked for, because my clients deserve top quality.
